How Soon Can Patients Exercise After 3D Bunion Correction™

Gym rats, runners, walker and everyone in between always want to know, “when can I become active again?”   Surprisingly, the answer is almost immediately….well at least modified.

For the first 3 months after 3D bunion correction™, patients are not allowed to perform any impact exercise or weight-training with pressure to the bottom of the foot.  This of course means modifying workouts and focusing on non-weightbearing exercises. Below are a few simple charts to help you better understand when you can begin exercising.

All the below recommendations are guidelines, and any return to a workout regimen should be discussed with Dr. Steinke.  Remember, being in a boot as you recover will reduce the intensity of your workouts, and when returning to your normal regimen after 12 weeks of recovery, increase intensity or duration by 10% per week as tolerated.

If you decide to exercise in the first 12 weeks after surgery, you put yourself at risk of injuring the surgical site if you overdo it.   Please listen to your body and again discuss any concerns with Dr. Steinke.

Dr. Steinke can help you formulate a plan for exercise after surgery taking into account your recovery and desired activity. Don’t begin workout without first discussing with Dr. Steinke.

I especially look forward to returning you to the physical activities that you enjoy, that the pain of your bunion prevents you from performing at your desired level.
